Waterstone is Going International

Waterstone is making its way into international sales! As a business it is always important to be taking steps forward, and this is our next big step as a company. After almost 20 years of hard work, dedication, and a love for our cliental, it has become clear that there is a demand for our high quality products outside of our own country. As an American Made business, this step isn’t just a big one for our business, it’s a big one for our country. The United States is known throughout the world for high quality, innovative goods and services, customer service, and sound business practices. Selling outside of our country will not only increase the U.S. reputation, it will also help to solidify our country as a valuable source of product and boost our own economy. As a trend setters, we hope to be an example to other American made companies. Our hope to see other small American businesses branch out into international sales as well. At first, it seemed like an intimidating feat, but after doing research and talking to other companies that have successfully branched into international sales, we realized that taking the step was actually easier then it looked, especially for smaller companies. In fact, small and medium-sized companies account for 97% of U.S. exporters! Exporting is not only great for growing small businesses and making them more profitable, it is great for the economy. As these small businesses grow, they create more local job opportunities for the community, which is always a good thing. Exports are critical to supporting American jobs. Record-breaking levels of exports supported 9.7 million jobs in 2011, an increase of 1.2 million jobs since 2009. In 2011, every $1 billion dollars of U.S. exports supported more than 5,000 jobs. Just imagine an America where we are able to sell locally made products around the world, creating more jobs and helping us to support our own economy! It all starts with American made companies taking a step towards international sales. Since Canada and Mexico are our closest neighbors, Waterstone decided that they would be a great place for us to start. We now are selling our products in both countries as well as a few inVietnam, Denmark, Holland and the UK. This step is so exciting for us, 20 years ago we never would have imagined that Waterstone would have grown so successfully and branch into international sales, but here we are! Follow us on our international journey on Instagram, Facebook, and Houzz as we enter into new kitchens around the world, embracing new styles and cultures with our high quality kitchen faucets! We can’t wait to see what new and beautiful looks these new designers will create!

U.S. Products – Is it Really Made In America?

Made in America? Since the 1970’s, the U.S. production of American Made and manufactured goods has been steadily on the decline. This drop-off, has come from the mass of cheaper overseas products that have flooded U.S. markets. This has made it difficult for consumers to find truly made in America products. U.S. businesses have recognized the importance of claiming “Made in America.” That title automatically buys them prestige in the market and into American homes. U.S. shoppers would rather buy American Made, but manufacturing here is more difficult and expensive. That makes true American made products hard to find. Unfortunately, there is a shady little work around that can get your product labeled “Made in the USA.” It is a dirty little secret and businesses are pulling the wool over Americans eyes. They are telling little white lies to profit on good intentions. So, What’s Going On? Here’s the problem: Many American based businesses are recognizing the importance of being American Made. However, they don’t want to have to jump over the difficult hurdles of actually manufacturing here in the States. So, here is the deception. All an American manufacturer has to do is buy pre-made product from overseas, ship it to the U.S., assemble it, package it, and then claim that it’s “American Made.” However, the product itself is made from overseas materials, manufactured by overseas factories, and gives the majority of the jobs to people overseas! These companies are able to claim the “American Made” title because at the very last stage of the process, American workers handled the product. What they should be claiming is that their product is “American Assembled.” Some do, but the majority prefer to take advantage of the legal loophole and leave their customers believing a false truth. Why is no One Stopping This? The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is the group that monitors the American Made claims and is charged with preventing deception and unfairness in the marketplace. However, the law that allows them to enforce companies to show where their U.S. content was created is only applied to automobiles, textile, wool, and fur products. There is no law that requires other products sold in the U.S. to be marked or labeled Made in USA correctly. There is no rule against having any other disclosure about their amount of U.S. content. This allows companies to falsely advertise “Made in America,” when in reality they aren’t. By buying all of their product overseas they are sending away jobs and the ability to grow America’s manufacturing economy. Why Does it Matter? You may be wondering: “OK, so why does any of this matter?” When businesses decide to take the easy and cheap route of buying and shipping from overseas, they are creating a couple of different problems. Job Loss By manufacturing overseas, companies are shrinking the jobs for future generations and limiting America’s independence. When we start to diminish the amount of manufacturing businesses, you are diminishing job opportunities for hard working U.S. citizens and giving them to people overseas. This also causes Americans to have to rely on those overseas countries for supplies, limiting our economic independence. Pollution U.S. manufacturers that go overseas are hurting our environment. The amount of pollution coming from foreign factories is enormous. From the mining of materials, the coal supplied power, the factories themselves and then the cargo ships that bring the product over here. Many of the countries these products are shipped from don’t have a government that enforces pollution regulation. Here in the United States, we have strict pollution regulations so that our air will stay clean. Overseas, that doesn’t always exist. Foreign Labor Standards Overseas manufacturers are not acknowledging foreign labor standards. The reality is that in many countries there are no foreign labor standards. Children to elderly are forced to work long hours in unprotected environments for almost no pay. You may think “That’s not fair!” but every time you buy something made overseas, there is a good chance you are adding fuel to the fire to that situation. Poor working conditions mixed with the poor pollution leads to poor lives and we are enabling it. Quality of Goods Overseas manufacturers are claiming that their products are up to American standards, but the majority of the time, they are not. When you buy America made products, you expect to get high quality. Businesses that make that claim and then produce low quality, inferior products are dragging America’s reputation through the dirt. How to Spot the Lie: If you want to buy truly Made in the USA products there are a few ways to make sure you are buying the genuine thing. First go and check out their website, if they claim to be American Made look at the fine print. A lot of times they will double back and say American Assembled instead. If it seems unclear, give the company a call and specifically ask if they are American Manufactured or just American Assembled. If they still claim to be American Made feel free to ask them where their manufacturing plant is in America, or which American business they source their materials from. A good example of truly Made in America company is Waterstone Faucets. We design, engineer, manufacture and assemble all of our parts here in Murrieta, California. For materials, we purchase brass and stainless steel from Chase Mills in Ohio. There are a few smaller parts we have to buy from overseas. Like plastic O-rings to secure water leakage. We would happily buy that O-ring from an U.S. business, but because of the decline in American manufacturing, there is no one in the States that makes what we need. Although we do use foreign O-rings, 99.5% of our faucets and accessories are manufactured in the U.S.A. We are qualified by the FTC to claim we are Made in America. If other businesses can’t answer those questions for you, then you probably have a bogus business on your hands. So, the next

Get the Lead Out! Eco Brass Keeps Drinking Water Safe

Waterstone – Lead Free Down to the Core Here at Waterstone, we strive to produce the highest quality faucets in the market. We understand the importance of using Eco-friendly materials to ensure the utmost safety and happiness to our customers. In order to guarantee the satisfaction of our customers, we use a lead free Eco Brass supplied by an American mill – Chase Brass in Ohio. Lead Free Eco Brass is different from regular brass in that it is required to meet a higher standard of excellence. Many times regular brass can include chemicals and metals that aren’t safe for human consumption. Lead Free Eco Brass upholds the standard of excellence by removing all of those chemicals and metals. Eco Brass is NSF 14 Compliant: Approved by the NSF (National Sanitation Foundation) and is not only Lead free but also Arsenic and Bismuth free. As well as being Lead free, Bismuth free, and Arsenic free, Eco Brass is also corrosion resistant to chemicals found in water and gas. It is also resistant to boiler and pressure vessel code registered alloy. Which means that it won’t break down under the constant flow of water, hot or cold. Eco Brass has the strength equivalent to Stainless Steel and it won’t get brittle at high temperatures. It is the highest quality brass in the market, and even though you may not notice, Waterstone cares enough to make sure that you don’t have too. We have your safety and longevity at heart when we choose to make our faucets from the highest quality materials. Waterstone Faucets are excellence to their core, quite literally! Lead Free: Why does it matter to be Lead free? Studies have shown that regular consumption of small amounts of lead can lead to lead toxicity. So, let’s say you buy a faucet that contains lead in the inner workings. If you drink water from that faucet, over a certain amount of time you are going to be exposed to possible lead toxicity. Lead toxicity can cause abdominal pain, cramps, aggressive behavior, sleep problems, headaches, loss of appetite, fatigue, high blood pressure, numbness or tingling in the extremities, memory loss, anemia, kidney dysfunction and most importantly, loss of developmental skills in children. If you want to keep your family safe, Lead Free Eco Brass is the way to go. Arsenic Free: Like Lead, Arsenic is not something that you want to be ingesting regularly. Arsenic is a natural metalloid chemical that may be present in groundwater. Ingestion only poses health problems if a dangerous amount of arsenic enters the body. Then, it can lead to cancer, liver disease, coma, and death. Bismuth Free: Bismuth can often be found in unclean brass. While many people will tell you that bismuth is non-toxic in small amounts, sufficient exposure can produce nausea, headache, diarrhea, and pain. About Chase Brass Chase Brass and Copper Company traces its origin back to 1837, and today is recognized as one of the most efficient brass rod mills in North America. We place specific emphasis on the quality of our product supported by prompt reliable service to our customers. Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent’s California Dream House

In a recent Open Door Video Series on Architectural Digest, celebrity designers Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent give a full-access house tour around their spectacular 1928 Spanish Colonial home in Los Angeles. The stars of TLC’s Nate & Jeremiah By Design take us through the design techniques and innovations that make their home unique. The 9,000 square foot home starts with a grand stairway in the entry that still has with its original wrought-iron balustrade. Straight out of a movie from Hollywood’s Golden Age. All rooms are large and bathed in sunlight. The backyard is filled with gurgling fountains, a koi pond, vegetable gardens and a 200 year old oak tree. In the kitchen, very little was changed. “This kitchen actually we didn’t really have to change that much because the layout was exactly what it was,” says Jeremiah. “And this island was exactly how it was, the same stone, even the same paint on the base. This kitchen, for whatever reason, the second we walked in to it, it felt like the heart of the home, and it really is the heart of the home. Every morning, every evening, every moment. It makes it that much sweeter.” The main sink area features an polished brass Annapolis Bridge Faucet Suite on a farmhouse sink. It matches perfectly with the Whitechapel brass knobs and surrounding countertops by Ollin Stone. On the island sink sits a polished brass Waterstone Annapolis Prep Faucet with matching Annapolis Filtration Faucet. Circa-1960 French barstools surround the island, with 19th-century French lanterns lighting it from above. Above an amazing stainless steel stove, is a Waterstone brass Wall Mounted Potfiller. 6 Can’t-Miss Kitchen Trends

Story by Preston Guyton There are certain aspects of kitchen design that tend to remain the same from one year to the next. However, there are always slight changes that could really improve the look, feel, or use of today’s modern kitchen. These kitchen trends for 2018 emphasize a sleek appearance, with an uncomplicated design that is nevertheless incredibly luxurious and should be viewed as a great example of home improvements with high ROI. Bench Seating People who think that bench seating is only for barbecues and big families would be wise to think again. Built-in benches that run along walls minimize the space needed to create effective dining space for the whole family. Putting benches on two sides of a table eliminates the boxy feel that a square or rectangular table surrounded by chairs often creates. Instead, it feels open and fresh, ready for everyone to sit down for a meal. Concrete for Countertops and Backsplashes Although natural stone countertops have stood as king of the kitchen mountain for many years, there are other surfaces poised to make a summit attempt. Concrete is a surprisingly practical and useful countertop material, available in a nearly endless variety of styles and colors. With proper sealing, concrete may be easier to maintain than a granite slab. Homeowners can have the concrete poured at their homes, or precast and then installed onto their cabinetry. The effect may be elegant, industrial, or even chic. Smart Upgrades These days, everyone wants a kitchen that will help them make their lives easier. Refrigerators come with built-in screens to help people cook, find out about the weather or traffic, or just listen to music while they prepare food. Smart appliances can connect to a user’s app through Wi-Fi to identify progress of cooking or energy use. Integration of the entire kitchen may allow homeowners to set their lighting, music, and ventilation all on the same system. Fixtures in Striking Colors Although the brushed or satin nickel finish of many kitchen fixtures remain popular, many homeowners are starting to branch out into color choices that range from classy to brassy. The prevailing interest in white quartz, concrete, or marble countertops, with white kitchen cabinets indicates that people have to find some color in the kitchen space. This means that kitchens are bursting to life with faucets in black, rose gold, gold, brass, and copper. Maximizing Useful Cabinet Space A kitchen with tons of cabinet space may not be laid out in a particularly effective way. At present, people are beginning to realize that the cabinet shelves at the very top are not exceptionally useful for them. As such, trends push toward the removal of some of the upper cabinetry, in favor of shelving and pull-out drawers to maximize the space of lower cabinets. This concept opens up the kitchen, increases the amount of viable counter space, and minimizes the wall space occupied by cabinets. Built-In Cabinetry for Appliances The idea of the centuries-old farmhouse with its scrubbed wooden table and rustic cabinetry has an almost timeless appeal. Put a stainless steel refrigerator and dishwasher in there, and it spoils the entire effect. For people who are willing to pay a certain premium, they can have their appliances built into their kitchen cabinetry, for a seamless look that loses nothing over any other modern kitchen. Cabinets can also accommodate space for small appliances, which declutters the countertops and helps to keep things tidy. Building the perfect kitchen is often based on trends that are popular for the year. In 2018, the countertops become functional, and let colorful fixtures take the limelight. Seating and cabinetry go simple, while the appliances stay at the top of the smart home game. Kanban: Crazy Complex or Super Simple?

Story and illustrations by Mackenzie Manley What is it? Lean manufacturing is manufacturing in its most simple, elegant form. Inspired by Toyota’s Production System, Lean employs pull systems and visual tools to align efforts across the organization which helps to drive out waste and inefficiencies. One such tool, called Kanban (meaning “card, or signal”) was inspired by the shelf restocking process in Super Markets – what is sold is quickly restocked. Toyota adapted this process to its factories and supply chain, and others successful manufacturers, including Waterstone Faucets, have followed suit. So How Exactly Does it Work? The best way to think about Kanban is to look at it like a Pull System. When you need an individual part you “pull” it from the bins that has been labeled specifically for that part. The bins have been stocked with exactly the amount you need that day to create products. A creative example of a Kanban system or lean manufacturing system is your local burrito joint! Let’s look at the process step by step: Step 1. Let’s say you are on your lunch break and craving a delicious burrito. The burrito shop you prefer happens to make the burritos in front of you and allows you to choose your own ingredients. There are many ingredients to choose from and each bin holding the ingredient is stored in its’ own bin. The bins are not very large, they probably have enough ingredients to last through the lunch rush. Step 2. As you choose your ingredients, Mike the burrito maker grabs each ingredient (or part) that he needs to complete your burrito (or product). Some of the ingredients are low in the bins but as you come to the cheese, Mike realizes that the cheese has ran out. Step 3. Mike takes the empty cheese bin back into the kitchen and exchanges it for a full bin of cheese. That full bin of cheese was prepared by Mike, who was noticed several customers earlier that the cheese bin was running low. Mike was able to quickly shred the cheese to fill the bin because the cheese, cheese shredder, and gloves are all kept in the kitchen in the exact same spots to help Mike find the tools he needs to shred the cheese quickly. Step 4. Mike takes the cheese container back, replacing it where it belongs and continues on with creating the burrito. Once you have chosen all of your ingredients, Mike wraps the burrito and places it in a container for you to take back to work. The transaction for the burrito is placed and you are pleased that the order was completed quickly and accurately! The Kanban System at Waterstone: Just like a Burrito shop, Waterstone utilizes this Kanban system in their inventory system. Instead of bins of ingredients, Waterstone has bins of faucet parts. All of the parts are milled in our factory in Southern California so that the bins can be replenished when they run out. When the customer orders the faucet or suite they desire, then the Kanban or lean manufacturing system starts up. Waterstone also incorporates the practice of organization. Every tool has its own place, and a well organized shop helps to encourage a more efficient and faster production rate so that you can get what you ordered faster! Waterstone’s president Chris Kuran was hesitant to make that jump from the complex system that Waterstone had been using to the simpler Kanban or lean manufacturing system. “I didn’t realize that there was an easier and better way to run the inventory system. When I learned about the benefits of Kanban , I knew that it would be the right fit for Waterstone since we are a smaller business and produce everything here in our own factory.” The Kanban system solved a very complex problem with a very simple solution. Waterstone has taken advantage of the Japanese wisdom to solve our own big problems, but Kanban can also be used on a much smaller scale, perhaps even in your own kitchen! Stick around and soon you will find out how using the Kanban system (with Waterstone’s help) can simplify your own kitchen experience!
